Dr Benjamin Cowie

 


Ben is an Infectious Diseases Physician with the Victorian Infectious Diseases Service at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and an Epidemiologist at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, recently designated as the WHO Regional Reference Laboratory for Hepatitis B. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne where he completed his doctoral thesis investigating novel approaches to an improved understanding of the epidemiology and control of hepatitis B virus infection in Australia.
He has a particular clinical and research interest in viral hepatitis, with a focus on epidemiological research to guide development of public health responses to hepatitis B. He was a member of the expert writing reference group for the First National Hepatitis B Strategy, serves on a number of Victorian and National committees related to hepatitis B policy, and contributed to the WHO Global Consultation on Prevention of Perinatal Hepatitis B Transmission in December 2010. He is Chair of the Viral Hepatitis Special Interest Group of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, and serves on the board of directors of the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine.
