Sizing Up the Man: the Importance of Penis Size to Men

Dr Christopher Fox

This paper explores the importance of the penis to men and the effect of perceived penis size and genital image in men’s body image. In western society we have a number of socio-cultural messages alluding to the importance of a large penis. Men are reluctant to attend to sexual health when it involves their penis. Two approaches were used in this study. A qualitative approach using interviews exploring men’s perceptions and thoughts on the penis and its importance was initially undertaken. Data were analysed using an inductive thematic analysis.
