Sexual Pleasure: a Gendered Affair

Associate Professor Ellen T. Laan

Even though sexual pleasure has not been the subject of much research, there is some evidence that suggests that it is a gendered affair. For instance, research suggests that around 90% of heterosexual men always orgasm during partnered sexual events (1,2), whereas the same is true for only 30 to 50% of heterosexual women (depending on the type of sexual activity) (2–4). This cannot be explained by women simply being less able to be orgasmic, as women who have sex with women reach orgasm in about 80% of all sexual interactions (5).
