Testosterone: its Role in Depression in the Aging Male

Jerald Bain MD

Testosterone (T) is not only a "sex" hormone; its physiological functions can be found in multiple bodily systems such as: hematopoiesis, the cardiovascular system, muscle, bone and brain metabolism. In the brain it is a potent stimulus of the centres responsible for libido and sexual arousal but T has other actions in the brain, perhaps even more important for emotional and cognitive function than its role in sexual responsiveness. The brain has androgen receptors; androgens support neuronal cell growth and survival; many studies demonstrate the increased sense of physical, sexual and emotional well-being during treatment with T.
