Recent insights into genital herpes infections: HSV shedding, treatment and interactions with HIV

A/Prof. Marcus Chen PHD

Genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is highly prevalent and a common cause of morbidity worldwide. Recent studies have highlighted the high frequency of subclinical shedding of genital HSV that can persist for years. Suppressive therapy with antiviral medication is highly effective at preventing symptomatic recurrences and leads to improved quality of life. Clinical trials support the efficacy of shorter courses of aciclovir, famciclovir and valaciclovir for episodic therapy.
