The History of Condoms

Professor Nam Cheol Park

The condom has been used to prevent unwanted pregnancy as well as sexually transmitted diseases throughout human history since Crete or ancient Egyptians era. In Asian countries, ancient Chinese used the silk made condom with oil lubricant and Japanese also used the leather made hard condom with dual purpose of disease prevention and penile supporter.

Professor Nam Cheol Park

Professor Nam Cheol Park graduated from Pusan National University School of Medicine, Busan, Korea, in 1981 and received his doctorate degree from the Pusan National University Postgraduate School in 1991. He joined the Department of Urology, Pusan National University School of Medicine as an Instructor of full time staff. He has worked as Assistant Professor in 1991, as Associate Professor in 1995 and as Professor and Chairman of Department of Urology, School of Medicine in 1999 and as Superintendent in Pusan National University Hospital in 2009-2012. His academic interests focus on the basic and clinical research in the field of andrology including sexual dysfunction, male infertility, prostate, and male aging. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and review articles including 38 SCI(E) articles, over 500 abstracts as well as 39 textbooks in the Korean and world literatures with many presentations and invited lecturer at various scientific and professional meetings, which was followed by giving 15 or more academic awards from Korean and international academic society. He has been one of the key members in Korean Urological Association and Korean Society for Sexual Medicine and Andrology as the president in 2006-2007 and Korean Society for Sexology as the president in 2012-2013. Currently, he also has an important role in the international academic societies in duties with a number of Asia Pacific Society for Sexual Medicine as secretary general in 2007, Asia-Pacific Society for Men's Health & Anti-aging as the president in 2009, Asia-Oceania Federation for Sexology as the president-elect in 2014.
