Do subtle neuro-developmental difficulties impact on young people’s gender identity choices?

Professor Samuel Stein

A large number of young people with subtle neuro-developmental difficulties are referred to adolescent mental health services each year due to concerns about emotional and behavioural problems. Whilst these young people present with elements of ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, OCD and Tics, they often fail to meet the strict diagnostic criteria for a particular diagnosis.
The difficulties which these young people experience relate predominantly to the way in which they process complex sequences of information, and their understanding of abstract and symbolic concepts. These young people become easily lost when issues are vague and undefined as their thinking tends to be very linear and concrete.

Recorded in October 2012 at the 13th ASSERT National Conference on:
'Sexuality: Beyond Difficulties, Definitions and Diversity', Melbourne, Australia.
