The Dutch Approach - starting as young as possible

Sanderijn van der Doef

Although many people believe differently, the Netherlands do not have a long history of mandatory school-based sexuality education. Only since the 1990s sexuality education became part of the curriculum of secondary schools. But sexuality education in the Netherlands is in another way rather unique: many schools introduced sexuality education voluntarily long before it became mandatory. Dutch teachers perceive adolescents as persons who can take their own decisions even concerning sexuality if they are equipped with the right information and skills. In the Netherlands it is also widely believed that sexuality education should start at a very early age.
